Banana is a tropical and subtropical herb with high growth rate and high yield. But banana has no main roots, and fleshy adventitious roots are extracted from underground corms. Roots are mainly distributed in the 10-25 cm depth of the surface soil, which determines its sensitivity to temperature, soil, water and fertilizer.
Cultivation environment
The optimum temperature for banana growth is 24-32 C, and the soil pH is 4.5-7.5. The soil has more pore and good physical properties. Banana is particularly sensitive to fertilizer. Nitrogen fertilizer can promote early flowering of banana and increase yield significantly. Potassium fertilizer is an essential component of synthetic pseudostem and leaf fiber. Bananas need the most potassium fertilizer, followed by nitrogen fertilizer and the least phosphorus fertilizer. The ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium is 4:1:14. The varieties with high stalk had lower K/N ratio; the varieties with short stalk had higher K/N ratio; the K/N ratio was lower in the early stage and higher in the later stage.
Fertilizer Requirement Characteristics
(1) Banana is a typical potassium-loving crop. Its potassium requirement is higher than any other fruit tree.
(2) The proportion of N, P and K nutrients absorbed by different banana varieties during the whole growth period was approximately the same, with an average of 1:0.19:3.72.
(3) The demand for calcium and magnesium in bananas is also very high. The absorption ratio of N to Ca is 1:0.69 and the yield ratio of N to Mg is 1:0.2, which are higher than the absorption ratio of N to P.
Fertility cycle
Seedling stage: The period from germination of suction buds to soil or transplantation of test-tube seedlings to extraction of large leaves lasted for 2-3 months. During this period, banana leaf area was increased to form corms and roots. Nutrients were supplied by the mother plant and absorbed from the soil. During this period, the growth of the plant was small and the fertilizer requirement was not large.
Vegetative growth period: from the beginning of extraction of large leaves to flower bud differentiation, lasted about 5-6 months. During this period, the number and area of banana leaves increased rapidly, and a large amount of nutrients accumulated to lay the foundation for flower bud differentiation. Nitrogen fertilizer was the most absorbed by bananas in this period. Under the condition of ensuring potassium fertilizer, more nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers should be applied to promote slow seedling plants of bananas. The biomass accumulation accounted for about 10-16% of the total biomass during the whole growth period.
Pregnancy bud stage: from flower bud differentiation to budding, lasted about 3-4 months. Banana plants grow more vigorously, grow faster, and absorb more nutrients. Especially, the plants need to differentiate flower buds, and the pseudostems grow thicker and stronger. Therefore, the demand for potassium uptake is greater, so as to promote the transformation, transportation and storage of carbohydrates. At the same time, appropriate amount of nitrogen fertilizer should be applied to promote the rapid growth and budding of banana seedlings. In this period, the plant biomass accounted for 30%-35% of the total growth period, and the fertilizer requirement was the largest. The high-stalked bananas budded when 31-34 leaves were extracted, and the short-stalked bananas budded when 28-30 leaves were extracted.
Fruit development and maturity stage: male and female flower differentiation to fruit maturity. During this period, banana leaves and stems gradually turned from vigorous to weak, thus reducing the absorption of nitrogen and phosphorus. However, due to blooming, fruit setting and fruit enlargement, the absorption of potassium fertilizer increased relatively. In addition, the absorption of buds also required certain nutrients to promote growth, so the principle of combining nitrogen and potassium fertilizer should be applied at this stage.
